A comparison between different methods to fill gaps in early precipitation series

Abstract The aim of this work is to analyse and compare different methodologies fill gaps in early precipitation series, evaluate which time resolution reachable, i.e. monthly or daily one. following methods are applied tested the 1764–1767 gap series Padua: (1) using a relationship between amounts frequencies; (2) transforming log with visual observations into numerical values through analysis, classification, calibration; (3) substituting missing an instrumental record from nearby, contemporary station same climatic area. To apply second method, descriptions reported Morgagni Logs grouped 37 classes transformed values, for calibration observed Poleni over 24-year common period. As third Temanza Pollaroli Venice used gap, application factor scale based on ratio Padua/Venice tempted. results these three discussed commented.
